There is nothing quite like a deep spring cleaning to feel fresh and renewed! This is why Red Roof® challenged its employees with the 2010 Golden Shovel Contest to encourage all properties to spruce it up this past May and June.
Each property in the portfolio was asked to work together as a team and enhance the ‘curb appeal’ of its exteriors through improvements to the landscaping, walkways, guest room door paint, sides of the buildings and more. Talk about a makeover! The Phoenix property clinched the title by refreshing its landscaping and flower beds, planting bougainvillea flowers in clay pots at the entrance, repainting the fire curbs Red Roof-red and the fire hydrants canary yellow, removing a tree that was blocking the Red Roof sign on the side of the building, and more.
Earlier this year a Red Roof survey revealed that guests say the brand’s exterior corridors are often the reason they chose to stay. Red Roof properties nationwide took advantage of the Golden Shovel Contest and saw it as an opportunity to reinvent their exterior corridors as a guest benefit and a point of differentiation for the brand. So without further ado, drum roll please, this year’s Golden Shovel Contest Champion is: Red Roof Inn® Phoenix Airport! Submissions were received from corporate and franchise properties, all contestants sent in the glowing evidence of their many exterior improvements to vie for the coveted championship title and Grand Prize.
“It really was a team effort,” said Kevin Hornbeck, the Red Roof Inn Phoenix Airport property’s general manager who has worked with Red Roof for 16 years. “The staff sat down to discuss how we can further draw travelers in to stay with Red Roof. It makes me feel so good with people coming in now, commenting on how pretty the building looks and asking if it is a new property.”
Red Roof also awarded a champion property in each geographical zone. These winners included the following properties: Red Roof Austin North, TX; Red Roof Lake City, FL; Red Roof Raleigh South, NC; Red Roof Knoxville West, TN; Red Roof Detroit Roseville, MI; Red Roof Huntington, WV; Red Roof Elkhart, IN; Red Roof Florissant, MO; Red Roof Elyria, OH; Red Roof Boston/Framingham, MA; and Red Roof Lancaster, PA.
“Red Roof is known for its friendly, fun brand image and guarantee of a clean, comfortable stay at an economical price,” said Marina MacDonald, senior vice president, sales & marketing, Red Roof Inn. “The attractiveness and cleanliness of hotel exteriors can often be the deciding factor in whether a guest will want to stay at a property. Congratulations to the Red Roof Inn Phoenix Airport and all of the participating properties for helping ensure that travelers will always choose Red Roof Inn!”
What’s more, J. D. Power has once again ranked the brand in the top tier of Overall Customer Satisfaction for the economy hotel segment. From cleaning up its exteriors to offering an affordable, unbeatable rate, Red Roof is doing all it can to keep the money in the pockets of its guests and guarantee its travelers a safe, comfortable, and clean stay.
